Why do Bricklayers need insurance?

Even with years of experience behind you, laying bricks and blocks and building walls, footings and other structural masonry doesn’t always go to plan. One mistake or unexpected issue on site can end up costing much more than the job itself. Insurance is there to help cover the financial impact when something goes wrong.

Insurance is also a requirement in many cases. Builders will typically ask for a Certificate of Currency as proof your cover is in place before allowing you to start work.

What can't Bricklayers Insurance cover?

All insurance policies have exclusions which keep the premiums fair and help reserve cover for genuine, unexpected events. We've listed some of the exclusions that every insured bricklayer should be aware of.

Faulty workmanship

Faulty workmanship

While public liability can cover the damages faulty workmanship causes, it cannot cover the cost of redoing the job itself. For example, if a bricklayer builds a wall incorrectly and it needs to be taken down and rebuilt, the cost of fixing the wall isn’t covered. But if that faulty work caused damage to other parts of the property - like a nearby structure or finished area - the cost of that damage may be covered.

Tools theft from open air

Tools theft from open air

If your brick saw, mixer or grinder gets stolen from an open job site or from an unlocked car, it won't be covered. VIZ's tools cover only applies to theft from a securely locked vehicle or building where there's evidence of forced entry. Cover for open air theft would mean everyone's premium pays for the few who don't lock up - so we chose to exclude it.

Injury to your employees

Injury to your employees

An employee is considered part of your business, and not a third party. Workers compensation insurance is typically required if you employ workers, depending on your state or territory, and is designed to cover this risk.

Work other than bricklaying

Work other than bricklaying

Your policy is designed to cover work that would be reasonably expected of a bricklayer. If you carry out other types of work, you’ll need to include this in your policy for it to be covered.

VIZ policies allow you to select multiple different occupations to be covered for - so you could get bricklaying and stonemasonry covered under one policy and only pay one premium!

Silica and asbestos

Insurers often choose to exclude super high risk situations from their public liability policies. For instance, VIZ (as well as most insurers) won't cover you for any work involving asbestos or silica.

Make sure you are aware of what your insurer excludes from your policy.

Take on jobs outside of bricklaying?

A VIZ policy can cover multiple occupations under one policy. If your bricklaying business also does:

  • ● Stonemasonry
  • ● Paving, retaining walls or other landscaping
  • ● Renovations

You can add these trades to the same policy and only pay one premium, which is set by the highest priced trade.

Public & Products Liability Insurance

Why You Might Need It

Public liability is the part of your cover that protects you if your work causes injury to someone else or damage to their property. For bricklayers and stonemasons, that can include situations where materials, tools or completed work cause damage on site – like damaging a client’s driveway, nearby fencing or finished surfaces during a job.

It’s also something you’ll usually need before you can get on site. Builders will likely ask you for a Certificate of Currency as proof that your cover is in place before you get to work on site.

Learn More

How It Works

You can choose from $5m, $10m or $20m of public liability cover. This is the maximum amount your insurer will pay for claims within a policy period.

Depending on the work you take on, you may need to hold a minimum level of cover - many builders and sites require $10 or $20 million of cover before you can start work.

With VIZ, your Certificate of Currency is emailed to you instantly after you take out a policy, so you can provide your docs straight away.

Infographic comparing average tools insurance cover selected by bricklayers, concreters and builders over a 4-year sample of VIZ policyholders. Bricklayers insurance customers averaged about $8,000 in tools cover, compared with about $10,000 for concreters and $13,000 for builders.

Tools & Equipment Insurance

Why You Might Need It

If you're a bricklayer or similar trade, your tools and equipment - like brick saws, mixers and grinders - are essential to getting work done and getting paid. Without them, jobs can come to a stop.

If you choose to include tools and equipment cover, it can help protect your gear if it’s stolen or damaged by an insured event, helping you repair or replace it and get back to work.

Learn More

How It Works

Tools and equipment cover is an optional extra you can add to your policy.

Choose from $5k, $10k or $20k of cover for general tools and equipment worth less than $2,500 per item. For bricklayers, that could include tools like brick saws, mixers, grinders and other essential equipment used on site.

If you have higher-value items - like a trailer or cement mixers - these can be listed individually on your policy as specified items. You can add up to $30,000 of specified items, giving you up to $50,000 in total cover. And don't worry - you can always add or remove tools from your policy once it's in place.

Tax Audit Insurance

Why You Might Need It

The ATO can audit any business, including bricklaying businesses, at their discretion - whether or not there’s been a mistake or issue. Some are selected at random, while others are reviewed based on their tax lodgements.

For someone running their own bricklaying business, a tax audit can mean dealing with accountants and professional fees while responding to the ATO. If you choose to include tax audit cover, it can cover those costs and help protect your cashflow.

How It Works

Tax audit cover is optional and can be added or removed from your policy at any time. It provides $50,000 of cover if selected, with the option to choose an excess that suits you.
